1991 Ormoc Flash Flood – The Meteorological Event

Uring (O2 to 06 November 1991), a relatively small and weak disturbance, intensified into a tropical storm in less than 24 hours at about 10:00 am, November 4, while still 350 kilometers east of Bicol Region. It weakened into a tropical depression with maximum winds of 55 kph, moving Southwest of Ormoc, then dissipating at about 10:00 a.m. November 6, 1991.

With the storm was a small-size blob of cloud with very intense rain as deduced from satelite pictures, radar echoes, and later, by ground rainfall observation. Rainfall catch records at Tacloban City alone was 140 millimeters (mm) between 2:00 am and 2:00 pm on 05 November 1991, an unprecedented event which occurs only once in fifty (50) years.
