Dr. Romil J. Tan is one the speakers during the “Farmer’s Forum” segment of the “31st National Fruit Symposium” held at Central Mindanao University, Bukidnon on July 24, 2024.

Dr. Tan discussed the topic “Avocado Production: A Profitable and Sustainable Opportunity”. His contribution in the establishment of cultural practices of avocado cultivation, in particular Haas variety is recognized by the fruit industry. His development of the improvement of fertilization program of avocado based on its phenology resulted to optimization of fertilizer use efficiency. Further, his development of bio-organic fertilizer also improves the growth, development and yield of Haas avocado. This resulted to better dry matter (DM) development, a most important quality parameter in avocado production.

Dr. Tan is currently an Associate Professor IV and the Chairperson of the Horticulture Department of Central Mindanao University. He was the former Project Manager of CMU Commercial Nursery and Fruit Crops and DA-CMU Seed and Planting Material Production of Vegetables, Durian and Hass Avocado. He was also a consultant to various local and multinational companies for banana, pineapple, avocado and other fruits and plantation crops production.

Prior to his teaching career in CMU, Dr. Tan was a former senior scientist of Dole Philippines Inc.. He was in- charge in the agronomic and soil and nutrition program of banana, pineapple, papaya and avocado and in the formulation and development of bio-organic fertilizer.

The “Farmer’s Forum” was attended by more than 130 participants including farmers, fruit growers, municipal agriculturists and cooperative members coming from different municipalities of Bukidnon.
